Growing up a single child with only one parent calls for some much-needed bonding time. Unfortunately
for myself, my father and I do not seem to find many things that interest us both that we can bond over,
except for when we go kayaking using our old trolling motor kayak. Growing up in Colorado, the surrounding wilderness has offered many
adventures for us to experience together. Kayaking with my father in Grand Mesa has been one of the
most valuable experiences and most cherished memories that I will carry for the rest of my life. I
remember a time when we were going down the Gunnison River enjoying the slow moving water
underneath us slightly taking us down the river on a cloudy day. We noticed that the water started to
pick us up in speed but only slightly until we came around the bend. Almost immediately we see that
about one hundred feet away the river drops roughly three feet and looked to continue for about a mile.
Thinking like most people familiar with trolling motor kayak, my father and I thought “We have this under control”.
We did not and learned that almost immediately when we both saw this was not just a dip in the river,
this was a dam. We both looked around and found out that the surrounding cliffs did not offer a solution
for getting out and climbing to the top of the cliff in safety was not an option. We prepared ourselves to
go down this river together one way or another. I honestly believed that we were both doing a great job
at keeping afloat and staying steady until the drops had more depth and larger rocks protruding out of
the water’s edge. My father keeping a keen eye on me making sure his little girl was okay did not notice
that the last drop was so large we both would go tumbling over the edge no matter what we did.
Tumbling over the edge is exactly what we did, right into a large open riverbed and as our personal
belongings drifted away with the current, and we were swimming to shore tugging our kayaks behind us
something came to my mind. It is these moments, the ones I think are just another day for me that I
must keep not only close to mind but to heart. These moments that I find are the true bonding
experiences that we have together that bring fear, love and laughter in all forms to us. The moment
when I had no idea if I were going to make it but then seeing my father knew I would be okay. Knowing
now we can laugh over this experience because we both were not prepared for what the day may bring
but knew if we stuck it through together that we would come out simply fine. I love trolling motor kayak, I love
spending time with my father while doing it. I like to spend my time kayaking when with my father
because this is something we both enjoy, we both find comforting and relaxing, until you go over a dam
and a few waterfalls. I like to spend my time kayaking because it gives me a sense of awareness to what
not only the world has to offer but what a relationship with my father has to offer.
